Wildlife experiences always depend on nature itself. Sea turtle activity, weather conditions and fieldwork schedules can change depending on conservation priorities and environmental conditions.
Our goal is not only to observe wildlife, but to understand it, respect it and support the people working every day to protect it.
Day 1
Welcome to Greece! Arrival at Athens International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Settle in and enjoy your first evening in the Greek capital.
Day 2
Explore Athens through a different perspective.
Visit the city with the “Invisible Athens” social tour, led by trained local homeless guides, followed by a visit to Shedia Home. Later, discover the Acropolis with a licensed guide and its surroundings with a guided cultural walk.
Day 3
Visit a sea turtle rescue centre in Athens, operated by the largest NGO dedicated to sea turtles Archelon. Learn about rehabilitation efforts for injured turtles and everything that supports their work throughout Greece. Next up, begin your journey south.
Your group gets the transfer in a comfortable vehicle to the South-Peloponnese (364 km, 5 hours drive), Neapoli. The drive is over good roads and the scenery is beautiful. Halfway: it’s time for a break at the world-famous Corinth canal!
Your accommodation for the following week will be at Limira Mare, in Neapoli. A stunning location, right on the beach where you will be offering your services for the Caretta caretta or Loggerhead Sea Turtles.
Day 4-6
Begin your conservation experience with Tulipa Goulimyi.
Learn about local wildlife, sea turtle conservation and wildlife first aid through an educational session with the local team. Take part in an interactive beach-based workshop and visit the wildlife hospital to discover how injured animals are cared for.
In the evening, join a guided beach patrol and learn how you will approach your work for the following days, learn about monitoring and protecting nesting areas.
That’s it! Time to Start sea turtle volunteering. Start early and experience the coastline during the most active hours for wildlife observation. Join the Tulipa Goulimyi team on conservation patrols, learning about nesting beaches and the work involved in protecting sea turtles.
Depending on the time of the year, activities include:
- looking for adult turtle tracks,
- locating nests, enclosing and marking them
- relocating the threatened nests
- locating baby turtle tracks,
- dealing with any hatchlings that are still on the beach
- shading of the nests to protect the hatchlings from disorientation
- help baby turtles arrive at the sea
- excavations of hatched nests to determine the hatching success
During your stay, you may also be needed for activities like:
- beach cleanings
- collection of reeds to construct the protection of the nest
- maintenance activities for the equipment
- raising awareness – inform beach users how to behave on the nesting beaches
However, there is plenty of time to chill, explore and relax. The actual volunteering will take roughly 4 hours a day. This means there is time to swim or snorkel in the Med or sunbathe Neapoli a small coastal town
Dinner is Greek, authentic, and delicious. vegan/vegetarian options are available.
Day 7
After your time in the Peloponnese, travel back to Athens. Enjoy the final moments of the journey before your departure.
Leave Greece with new knowledge, memories and a deeper connection to Mediterranean nature.
