Coronavirus update for travel to Greece

Coronavirus update for travel to Greece

Greece has managed to flatten the curve more so than any other country in Europe , with stringent measures and vigilance.

As per 4 May 2020 the lockdown in Greece ends. What is known so far is that on May 18, the government plans to allow free movement on the mainland. In practice, this means that everyone will be able to drive wherever they want.

However, the same will not apply on the islands. Now the plan stipulates that free movement on the islands will be allowed as of June 1 and will be accompanied by the opening of restaurants, cafes and year-round hotels.

Summer holidays in the aftermath of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic can be possible as long as vacationers keep safe distances and follow basic hygiene rules, according to infectious diseases expert Nikolaos Sipsas.

According to Sipsas, people will still be able to swim and go to the beach but keeping distances and making sure to do whatever it takes to protect themselves and others against the deadly virus will be the new “normal”, he said. Sipsas went on to add that Greece is set to open to travelers from abroad with authorities examining ways to ensure that there will be no Covid-19 carriers entering the country. These may include on-the-spot antibody tests, “immunity passports” or health certificates.

Even though the Greek government is gradually easing COVID-19 restrictive measures nothing is certain. Therefore it is best to keep checking daily updated websites on travel during the COVID-19 outbreak from organizations like the WHO and National Public Health Organization of Greece. See the list with links below.
