About the Experience
The Amvrakikos Gulf is a unique Mediterranean ecosystem, combining shallow waters, wetlands, lagoons and coastal habitats that support a remarkable diversity of wildlife.
During this programme, participants step into the role of environmental researchers. Guided by marine experts, they learn about dolphin ecology, marine conservation and scientific monitoring techniques while exploring the Gulf by boat. Activities may include wildlife observation, photo-identification and learning how researchers collect information about marine populations.
The programme also introduces participants to the wider ecosystem, from important bird habitats to coastal conservation challenges, creating a deeper understanding of the connection between marine life and the environment.

Other Information:
Preveza, Amvrakikos Gulf & Lefkada Island
The journey begins in Preveza, a charming coastal town located at the entrance of the Amvrakikos Gulf.
This protected area is recognised for its rich biodiversity, including important habitats for dolphins, sea turtles and many bird species. The wetlands surrounding the Gulf provide essential feeding and breeding areas for wildlife and form one of Greece’s most valuable natural landscapes.
For those who wish to extend their trip, or add an additional stop the adventure continues to Lefkada Island, combining marine exploration with the beauty of the Ionian coastline, turquoise waters and traditional Greek island life.
Wildlife encounters always depend on nature. Dolphins and other marine species live freely in their natural environment, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Our approach focuses on respectful observation, learning from experts and supporting greater awareness of marine conservation.
Day 1
Welcome to Greece! Arrival at Aktion Airport (Preveza) and transfer to your accommodation. After settling in, enjoy some time to relax by the sea and join an introduction to the wildlife and conservation themes of the programme.
Day 2
Begin your marine adventure.
Board the research vessel and explore the waters of the Amvrakikos Gulf in search of dolphins and other marine wildlife.
Accompanied by marine biology experts, participants learn about dolphin behaviour, the local ecosystem and scientific monitoring methods. The expedition includes responsible wildlife observation and an introduction to how researchers collect information about marine species.
Day 3
Continue exploring the Gulf with another marine expedition.
Learn more about scientific research methods, including innovative approaches used to understand marine mammal populations. Later, discover Preveza’s historic old town through a guided cultural walk.
Day 4
Discover the incredible biodiversity of the Amvrakikos wetlands.
With local experts, explore important bird habitats and learn about species conservation and wetland ecosystems.
The day continues with an environmental presentation and a beach clean-up activity, encouraging participants to connect conservation knowledge with practical action.
Day 5
Start your day early and visit the port of Preveza to meet with its local fishers. They will tell you all the stories about the local wildlife, their relationship with dolphins, seals and sea turtles and their collaboration with iSea – a marine NGO focused on the protection of the marine ecosystems. Together, you will learn all about shar and ray behaviour, their primary threat which is accidental bycatch in fishing gear and the conservation actions that take place in order to save these precious species.
In the afternoon, travel back in time with a visit to ancient Nikopolis.
Explore the archaeological site and discover the history of this important Roman city. Continue with a museum visit and a hands-on Greek cooking experience, combining history, culture and local traditions.
Day 6
Optional: Discover the beauty of the Ionian islands.
Enjoy a boat trip exploring some of the region’s most spectacular coastal landscapes, including famous beaches and nearby islands such as Kefalonia and Ithaca.
